By Maritim Beryl

How do you say ‘woman’ in your language?

The feminine form is a universal language that cultures worldwide have embraced and respected for centuries. From French to Spanish, Taita to Chinese, this unspoken bond transcends boundaries and can be seen in countries across the globe. The words used for ‘woman’ often reflect her strength, beauty, perseverance, and status within each culture or community. In this post, we’ll explore how different languages honor women with their pronunciation and provide insight into various cultural conceptions of female power.

In each and every country, culture, tradition, and language there is a unique name for a woman that expresses her beauty and strength to no limits. Every language has different words conveying powerful meanings about women; from Latin “Femina” which means faithful friendship or French ‘brune’ denoting dark-haired female to Spanish ‘dama’, depicting a gentlewoman with class.

Women from all cultures have a great influence on their families, communities, and societies. From ancient times to the present day, women have played a crucial role in society by providing support and guidance to the people around them. They are the foundation of our civilization, preserving the traditions of the past and creating new paths for the future.

At African Yuva, we believe in honoring women’s strengths across cultures. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate and recognize the courage, resilience, and achievements of women around the world. African Yuva is proud to recognize and celebrate the strength and courage of women from all walks of life, and we are committed to amplifying the voices of all women. Join us as we honor and celebrate women on International Women’s Day and throughout the year! This is why we named our newest collection “ The Atek collection” referring to a strong woman in the Luo Language from Kenya.  All the pieces are named after and pay homage to the different ways women are referred to across the world.

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day of celebration and recognition of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This special day is celebrated every year on March 8th. It is a time to reflect on the progress made, call for change, and celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women around the world who have played an extraordinary role in making the world a better place.

This day also serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create a truly gender-equal world. While the spirit of International Women’s Day has been around since 1909, it was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975. Since then, countries across the world have marked this day with rallies, parades, and other activities to honor women and fight for gender equality.

The celebration of International Women’s Day has grown significantly over the years. It is now observed in more than 100 countries worldwide and has become an official holiday in many countries, including Afghanistan, Nepal, Zimbabwe, and several countries in Europe.

At African Yuva, we are proud to honor women’s strength and resilience across cultures. We believe that true change and equality can only come when we recognize and celebrate the unique contributions that all women make in our society.
